Royal Sporting Heroes

At the Sports Museum at Kallang Stadium, you just might catch a glimpse of your favourite sporting hero. I’m sure this particular swimmer needs no introduction.

I thought this was a cool juxtaposition of the icon and the muscle man himself. Azman Abdullah was the first in Singapore to win gold at the IOC-sanctioned World Games Bodybuilding Championships in 1993.

Sports is people exercising in our own backyards or void decks or schools or wherever you find youself some space. Did you know that the 1993 Great Singapore Workout made it to the Guiness Book of Records for the largest mass aerobic session held in one location? It was held at the Padang with 26,013 participants.

Test yourself; see if you can recognise all of the sports personalities featured on the museum’s Hall of Fame.

What is sports without the Olympics? Can you make out the sports that are featured on these images of the early Olympic Games? What do the five rings of the logo and their colours stand for?

A photograph captures the spirit of the moment; this looks quite comical but in the hot and dusty weather conditions, the official was in fact giving Michel Theato a cool welcome with the hose, while he was en route to winning the Marathon for France.

Do you know Singapore first made the Olympics in 1948? Try and spot the word Singapore in this photograph.

No, it isn’t the abominable snowman, it’s one of the brave team of eight Singaporeans to take on the 1999 Antarctica Expedition. I had no idea that the sports museum would make me swell with pride, upon knowing that Singapore has produced more than a fair number of sporting heroes (and scaled more than our modest Bukit Timah Hill).

This is one museum I have yet to visit. It's good to have a museum to celebrate the sports. =)
