They don’t prepare steamed flower crabs like that anymore

This must have been in the 80s, when we could go to Tekong to enjoy the rustic charms. It was really like the “po-tuey” (downtown) bumpkin going to the “sua-teng” (countryside).

Thanks to my Japanese friend who religiously keeps the photos, I have these to share. It was a time when Singapore was growing wildly. I mean economically and my job involved working with the Japanese to set up our communications systems as fast as possible. So, we worked hard and we played hard. Actually, ate.

So, weekends meant outings, exploring Singapore for the visitors. Tekong was my favourite and so, naturally, I brought them there. For a walk, and the attraction was: seafood and wild boar meat! Imagine they just lifted the flower crabs kept in the traps in the water to cook on demand. While we came in the old bumboats, some came in the speedboats which they just moored next to the stilted restaurant.
Queues on Sunday noons were not uncommon. But we were bound to return to mainland Singapore happily and well fed. Ah, these will now remain as memories.

Thanks for sharing the photos. I thank your friend too. These are sights that I will never get to see in my lifetime, I think.

Happy that you like and appreciate the photos. My regret is that I did not bother to take pictures then. These are precious moments of my youth. (^^) Victor
