I was lucky enough to get a sneak peek at the Singapore Art Museum’s (SAM) Fiction@Love exhibition, which opens on May 12. A vibrant display of Animamix (Animation+Comics) art, the exhibit will certainly make you feel young (even if you aren’t really…)

Fiction@Love curator Qinyi was kind enough to take me round the gallery, where I met Japanese artist Ai Yamaguchi, intently working on her installation for Fiction@Love. The piece of installation art she’s working on is called Hyaku no hana, yuki wa furitsutsu, and has to be (re)painted at every exhibition venue to fit the venue’s dimensions. Whew! If that isn’t tiring…
To whet your artpetite, here’s a picture of Ai’s project from its last run at the Offcina Asia exhibition in Italy (2003). (Credits to Ninyu Works for the photo.) The SAM installation won’t be quite the same, of course. ; )

Another quirky piece I saw is the one below by Chinese artist Chen Fei entitled “Bang Bang” (I kid you not). Cute or gruesome? You decide.

Two random snippets from other artworks:

I don’t know about you, but the old man gives me the celebrity vibe. :p
Other works include installation art by local artists as well as illustrations by Jimmy Liao, best known as the author of Turn Left, Turn Right (the comic which inspired the Takeshi Kaneshiro+Gigi Leung movie).

With all the clutter I saw, you can be quite sure the SAM staff are working hard to get Fiction@Love ready for your viewing pleasure.
To get the bigger picture (quite literally), come down to SAM between 12 May - 2 July.
Can’t pick a lucky date? I’ll help you. No date better than 21 May.
In conjunction with International Museum Day celebrations, not only will there be FREE entry, there will also be shuttle buses at regular intervals to take you to the Museum of Shanghai Toys.*
Enjoy!

Seems to me SAM could also try to organise something similar involving local artists. Plenty of local talent around. I'm sure a mix of pros and amateurs would have a nice local touch. SAM folks reading this? :)

Ivan: There are Singaporean artists in this show too. In fact ZERO and Joanne will be featured in a very special Body Art public programme. Bringing their art to the masses in Orchard and Raffles Place. Furthermore, Fiction@Love being a travelling exhibition, gave our local artists overseas exposure too. And as for amateurs, they are encouraged to join the Storyboarding and 1000 Trexis (art) competition. The best works will be on display at the museum.

Hi Amy, actually I meant a separate exhibition for local artists relating to such a theme. Kinda like a celebration of younger local artists (mix of pros and amateurs). You know, spur the growth of local artists. Of cos, the Fiction@Love exhibition is great. I'll make time to go visit. Pity you didn't think about the library though, 'cos I can think of a few ways for library to support this (fiction reads is our domain after all). Oh, I hope you publicise this event to youth.sg and the local art forums as well, esp. the competition for amateurs.

Thanks for the tip Ivan! Did you catch last year's President's Young Talents exhibition? Just wondering what you thought of that. :)
