I Can Relate to This!

On a little street in Singapore

“On a little street in Singapore
With me - beside a lotus covered door
A veil of moonlight on her lovely face
How pale the hands that held me in embrace
My sails tonight are filled with perfume of Shalimar
With temple bells that guide me to her shore
And then I hold you in my arms
And love the way I loved before
On a little street in Singapore”
Words & music by Billy Hill and Peter DeRose

A walking tour of Club Street was one of the many activities planned in conjunction with International Museum Day 2006.

Part of the Singapore Sights trail, this tour happened at the Singapore City Gallery today.

Their scale models of our city never fail to amaze me.

Singaporeans waking up early on a Saturday morning to join a walking trail?

Everyone wanted to get on the first tour at 10.15am.

Our host Diana Chua had many interesting tidbits to share with us.

Did you know:

1) The plaque of the very first Chinese Clan association, Ning Yueng Wui Kuan, still exists at its original spot, but its currently obscured?

2)

…is half the hill it used to be?

The landscape has changed so much…

… this was actually the doorway of the first level of a house.

3) The club which Club Street got its name from…

… still stands proud today?

What can i say, the tour had it all!

Flora…

Fauna…

Lovely architecture…

… and peculiar sights.

I must admit I really enjoyed taking an educational and leisurely walk through a street in Singapore I’d usually hurry by without giving a second’s thought to. (of course, my main concern then was to get my bag of piping hot self-fried ham chim peng from Old Maxwell Market back to my office asap. Drop us a comment if you remember that.)

That graffiti in your first picture (left side of Club Street road sign) is similar to the one here (second row of pics). I'm not sure which street artiste he is, but this guy is part of the team working on the mural on Singapore Art Museum's facade. The big reveal (complete with lightshow) will be on 27 May, also a part of International Museum Day. Everything's interconnected in this small dot of ours! : )

How quirky! Did they then build a basement / new first floor? What happened to the residents? Gosh, this is really interesting. Wish I went, then I could've asked Diana 101 questions. Maybe I'll go bug the good people at ASK! heh heh...
