A chance encounter at at the Swapatorium, a blog about finding things at your flea markets and garage sales led me to an interesting piece about the Thieves Market at Little India and finding an album of old wedding studio photos. The pictures are estimated to be dated in the 70s (possibly earlier) and they lend an interesting window to bridal styles of yesteryear:

But the best deal of all was an envelope full of vintage wedding photos which I got as a lot for $10 Sing. There are probably 50 photos in there, each one different, from a variety of studios in Singapore. Not a single picture is the same, though some depict the same people, which leads me to suspect they may have been proofs from a photographer’s portfolio. The studios were likely Chinese-run, and most of the couples look Chinese with maybe a little bit of Malay (Chinese make up 75 percent of Singapore’s population). Many of the photos have stamps or embossings at the bottom featuring the name of the studio. One thing I found odd is that almost no one is smiling is the photos, which is a old Confusion custom, even here in Korea where I’m living. It’s neato to see these girls in their lacy ’70s mini-dresses, looking so hip and modern, but still practicing such an old custom.
I wonder who they are? Do they look familiar to you? (hey, maybe some of our older readers might know them. Victor? Chun See? Wee Kiat? you never can tell…) There’s also a lone photo that has some writing at the back that the blogger needs help in translating. Think you can help? Read the full article and see more pictures here.
