At a time when many articles on the blogosphere and letters to the newspapers discuss the unhappiness of our young people, with some even talking about emigrating to greener pastures, one 59-year old Briton recalls with great fondness his childhood years here almost half a century ago.
In a series of 9 lengthy articles posted in Good Morning Yesterday, John Harper recalls with amazing detail, the time he spent in Singapore from 1957 to 1959 when his Warrant Officer father was posted to the RAF (Royal Air Force) in Singapore.
I am sure you will be proud and touched by words such as these:
“Call me a sentimental old fool but I love Singapore and love talking and writing about it. Each time that I depart from Changi airport I shed a small inward tear and hope that I’ll be back someday soon.”
“On my personal list of 100 things to do before I die is “visit Singapore again!” It is such a wonderful place that I never tire of visiting it, talking about it and writing about it.”
As we celebrate Singapore’s 41st birthday, one of the things you can do this National Day is to read John’s memories of Singapore in those years just before we gained independence here.
