Roti man

A mobile roti man still plies his trade along Upper Serangoon Road.
A mobile roti (bread in Malay) man on Upper Serangoon Road. No it’s not anywhere near Little India, but rather a little north of Kovan.
Perched on an ancient Raleigh (with a solid steel bar between the handles and the seat like the one my little duck used to dangle from in a rattan basket decades ago), the old Haji hawks buns, baguettes and fat, fluffy loaves that he painstakingly slices and smothers with green kaya and Planta – all for a hexagonal dime.
He pedals on slowly, for though the road is now much wider than it was in his youth, there is little space left in the minds and memories of the drivers who hurtle pass him in their hurried frenzy for one such as him – a peddler of simple delights in an age of endangered enjoyments.

he's been there for as long as I lived in Hougang (20yrs)! I'd always catch him late in the evening near my block when he retired for the day. Thanks for this post Marcus.

It's such a shame that our world is so rushed. If only people could find the time to relax maybe our world would be a little less aggressive. here's to the roti man!
