A little dated, but a gem nonetheless - Chun See from goodmorningyesterday blogs about traditional food packaging that were used in tar-powing our food in the old days. None of that plastic bag, takeaway box for you, even the brown wax paper is a relatively new food wrapper!

In our kampong days, most food were packaged in leaves. The most popular were the banana leaf, the simpoh air leaf and opeh leaf. Others included the coconut and pandan leaf. Whilst banana leaf is still quite commonly used today for foods like nasi lemak and otah the other two are quite rare. In the old days, banana leaves were often used to hold slabs of tofu in the market. But they seemed to have stopped this practice.
Banana leaf, opeh leaf, newspaper, brown paper… come unwrapped here.

Looking at the picture of the opeh leaf remind me of younger days in the late seventies when I had to bring along an egg to tar bow a pack of char mee. Thanks a lot for bringing back my sweet kampong childhood days.

Hi Tony. I wish I could add the aroma of the opeh leaf to the photo. Certain to bring back even more memories.
