One fine day, I visited one of the museums in Singapore and I saw the above sculpture.
Now, who has turned the head of this sculpture upside down?
Actually, this sculpture titled Red Face is a work by the late Ng Eng Teng. Ng Eng Teng (1934 - 2001) is best known for his sculptures. According to this source, the secret behind Ng Eng Teng’s mastery of the sculpturing of human forms lied in his endless practice in sketching and painting human figures.
In Red Face, Ng Eng Teng initially turned the head upside down with lips pointing upwards. This defies the customary presentation of the head, and I find it quite cool and humourous. It also challenged the viewer to see things beyond the conventional perspectives.
To find out more about Ng Eng Teng’s works on display at the NUS Museum, do check out the post: NUS Museum: The works of Ng Eng Teng. In the post, you will also get to read about some of my personal responses to Ng Eng Teng’s Wealth and Contentment, his Torso-to-Face and his Mother and Child series.
