Panel discussion about heritage on Radio Singapore International

Last night, I updated my podcasts* and received a Radio Singapore International segment about heritage in Singapore. Mubin Sa’adat conducted a panel discussion with three Singapore heritage bigwigs. A good overview of how our museums are attempting to reach out to the masses, particularly to the younger set. Part of this outreach is yesterday.sg, of course! I extracted the summary from RSI’s page and wrote a simple timeline of the panel discussion.

Summary

Promoters of heritage constantly face the challenge of showcasing its relevance to present society. The preservation of memories should extend beyond the walls of the museums and institutions in Singapore. For this to happen, new methods of engaging the younger generation have to be in place. In 25 minutes this week, Mubin Sa’adat speaks with members of the heritage community to find out more about the importance of heritage and the kinds of initiatives in place to attract and sustain public interest.

Timeline
01:10 How do we define heritage in the Singapore context?
03:30 Heidi and Michael go further into how specific exhibits at various museums were curated.
06:24 What is the role of heritage in fostering identity?
09:24 Is it becoming more difficult to preserve our heritage in the light of globalisation and a changing landscape?
13:06 How do our museums compare in the international context?
14:12 How can the intrinsic value and meaning behind heritage artefacts and monuments be brought to the younger generation?
17:42 How big is the group of heritage patrons and benefactors in Singapore? What is being done to encourage the growth of this group of people?
21:15 Interview with classical Indian dancer Mrs Rathi Karthigesu about why she contributed her collection to heritage.

Oh yes, there is a related podcast over at Lush 99.5. Sin Yee interviews Tamil Selvi Siva, who talks about a couple of the treasures of the National Museum of Singapore: the Mace of Singapore and the portrait of Sir Shenton Thomas. Download the mp3 (17m 40s, 16.4mb)

* I am subscribed to the Info-Education podcast from RSI English and the Art of Lush podcast from Lush 99.5. These and more are available at podcast.sg. One gripe though: they release all their podcasts for the week at one go, so if you subscribe to two or more radio station podcasts, it’s a daunting amount to listen to. Good thing the download speeds are fast. This is a fantastic service by MediaCorp Radio.

That's interesting... and I didn't know that there was a podcast.sg. Finally something overseas Singaporeans can catch up on.
