I Can Relate to This!

A Chapter into Independence

This book, entitled “The Battle for Merger” was printed in 1961 at the Government Printing office in Singapore. It captures a series of 12 radio talks between September 13 and October 9 in 1961 on the struggle for independence from British rule.

These 12 talks were written to clarify and explain the political situation in Malaya and Singapore, and the struggle for power of communism in Singapore and its supporters in Malaya. A copy of this book, now out of print, made its way to the National Museum of Singapore in 1995.

I chose this artefact as it is very relevant to Singapore’s History, and it was at a period of political instability where the PAP was battling it out with the communists, who were creating trouble for them as they opposed merger with Malaysia. I feel that it is important that we know our history so that we can learn from the past, and appreciate our efforts to achieve independence.
