How a Korean student learns about the history of Singapore

This is a print called “Rade De Sincapour.” It depicts the view of the Singapore River from Government Hill. It was done in the year 1839.

I am a foreign student– a Korean who is currently studying in a local primary school.

Being new to this country, I am intrigued by the history of my host-land.

When I look at this print “Rade De Sincapour” it depicts a history of more than a thousand words.
This picture tells me how beautiful Singapore was and is. This picture depicts peace in the country– as peaceful as the waters of Singapore River. The running, calm waters also epitomises the people’s wishes of progress and prosperity. I can see two strong and powerful animals– could be horses, at the rivermouth. It is as if we to show that Singapore is guarded by our young NS Stallions.

Singapore is not a home for Singaporeans alone. It is a home for foreigners like me too.
