Smoking is bad!

Post No.5! ( I must REALLY be getting shameless and desperate for a nice prize) SO anyway, this is a postcard depicting some opium smokers gathered in a house doing what else? Smoking opium of course.

Opium was a popular thingy to smoke last time. It gave you a ‘high’, sort of like what drugs do to you these days. Like the cigarettes many people still smoke today, this is a prime example of people destroying their lives early on, like, you great-great-grat-great grandfather’s time? Maybe earlier!

This kind of ties in with the government’s recent (or not so recent) policy to reduce the number of areas which smokers are allowed to smoke. This was probably also the case that time, what’s more, opium became a contraband item in Singapore during Raffles’ reign and most of it was seized. Obviously, the smokers got angry, but how can you fight the law? SO they secretly went and smoked their opium in private places like unused shophouses, etc.

Surprisingly, this is still VERY evident in our modern day context. I guess old habits die hard huh?

I humbly apologise for this boring post (compared to my others). I just thought…this was a topic we ought to be more serious about. Both my grandfathers…they died of cancer, one of which was due to lung cancer caused by excessive smoking. In fact, both of them smoked lots. ALthough I wasn’t particularly close to them, I could tell that my parents felt sad at their funerals.
