They sure were not kidding when they said to ditch all diet plans at Explore Singapore!‘s Big Eat Out at the Peranakan Museum today. It was a good thing I decided to take a walk from City Hall MRT Station to work off some calories before digging into yummy char kway teow, satay, Indian rojak, fried Hokkien noodles, Old Chang Kee’s curry puffs…I could go on.

$10 got me 9 makan (food) vouchers and a single entry to the quaint Peranakan Museum. 9 of these vouchers got my friends and myself plenty of mouth-watering, absolutely delicious hawker fare, with each mouthful winning a “mmmmm!” from our still-chewing selves. The combination of authentic local dishes that carry recipes spanning over decades with a free pass to the Peranakan Museum was aptly executed, in my opinion – in this year’s Explore Singapore! Singapore has left her international footprint as a food paradise, and today’s makan session summarised a major section of our heritage.

I was close to stepping into a role of paparazzi when I spotted comedian Mark Lee strolling into the Peranakan Museum with a group of people for his personalised rendition of the Peranakan culture. Mark turned museum guide for the day as he brought us through the highlights of the museum, elaborating on topics dearest to our hearts – food, wedding traditions, funeral affairs and famous Peranakan individuals. In addition, who could miss Mark’s funny remarks along with a brief lesson on history? Perhaps he could consider doing this part-time, having engaged so many elder folks and children in his one hour tour. I was considering tagging alongside him for his second tour if not for the flea market waiting right outside the museum.

It is times like this when you wish the shopaholic in yourself never emerges. I could not resist a good bargain and bagged some earrings, a top and a second round of food (AGAIN!) $10 with friends on an awesome outing plus a little knowledge gained, looks like the next few weekends are set to truly Explore Singapore in an all new fashion. Who says Heritage is boring? Not with food, shopping and friends!
