Free Entry to Museums During Chinese New Year!

Chinese New Year usually heralds in many wonderful things, of which include mouth-watering New Year goodies and of course, the mandatory ang paos. Of course, it comes with one having to fulfill his or her role and responsibility as a filial son or daughter, leading to the seemingly endless string of relatives berating you on the importance of getting married. So yes, Chinese New Year would, year after year, always constitute the same comfortable dynamics which we have come to know and love.

This year, National Heritage Board is looking to enhance this experience of yours by opening its museums for free on the 27th of January. Do take this opportunity to indulge in the cultural and historical entities which are on display. These are but a glimpse of what the museums have to offer.

Witness the evolution of Angkatan Pelukis Aneka Daya (APAD), one of Singapore’s most established art associations. Tracing the relationship between tradition and innovation, APAD: Tradition, Innovation and Continuity brings together works of past and present APAD members in celebration of the association’s 46th anniversity.

This exhibition showcases the works of established artists like A Ghani Hamid, Iskandar Jalil and S Mohdir, as well as young promising artists such as Amin Yasin, Harman Hussin and Rofizano Zaino. It examines the roles of older artists in the development of Singaporean art, and how their works inspire the young.

Don’t miss the opportunity to view one of the most significant archaeological finds of the 20th century - a cache containing 400 ancient Chinese Buddhist sculptures unearthed in 1996 in Qingzhou, China. This was the very site where the majestic Longxing Temple once stood.

Travelling from the Art Gallery of New South Wales to South-east Asia for the first time, these ancient Chinese Buddhist sculptures – with the tallest towering at 3.1 mertres – are certainly a sight to behold.
