Bungalow in Bedok

SINGAPORE - MONDAY MARCH 30 2009 :::

This bungalow in Bedok aroused my curiosity.

Maybe to you Singaporeans it appears ordinary. But to me, being new in this country, it seems to be a typical relic of the times when houses like these used to overflow with extended families is meant to be the nucleus of the rural area.

What was life like back then? Who lived in this house? How does it feel like to see the surroundings changing so drastically over the years? What memories about this bungalow are left?

EDITOR’S NOTE:

Thanks Donna for your post and your video submission - the very first we’ve received since the relaunch of this portal. If any YSG members can shed some light on the history of this bungalow in Bedok or memories of similar houses, we would like to hear from you!

The owner lives across the road. She is linked to our political leaders. Went to her house once - fantastic collection of curios and old Singapore.

to the cameraman, Did u shoot from the church nearby? if u did that church building in Jalan Haji Salam is dated back to pre-WW2. You can also a video clip of an empty bungalow plot facing the army camp - that was the original site for SPRING COURT Restaurant back in the early 1950s. Spring Court was once at Upper East Coast and Great World before down at Cross Street.

Thanks Peter, that really sounds thrilling! Without wanting to be too indiscreet but can you remember details of curios and old Singapore in it? Pictures, tableware, furniture?

I'm a student from temasek junior college currently working on a project to document the history of Bedok and this house came up as a particular point of interest. Can anyone provide any info you know abt this house, its history or its surroundings? Would be very helpful!
