SINGAPORE - THURSDAY MARCH 26 2009 ::: Besides the Nyonya kebaya and food, the Peranakans are renowned for their intricate beadwork - an artistic tradition that manifests itself in forms like purses, tapestries and even pouches for holding spectacles. The slow stitcher posts images of some of the Peranakan beadwork featured at the Peranakan Museum.
The Nyonya’s ability to craft intricate beadwork was a reflection of her upbringing and desirability - the epitome of the beadwork skill was in the crafting of the kasut manek, or beaded slippers, which formed part of the Nyonya’s traditional dress. Peranakan women start learning this skill at the age of 12, and by the time they were of marriagable age they would be expected to have mastered the skill. In fact, they were expected to showcase their skill in beadwork on their wedding day!
Check out some of the fine examples of beadwork on display at the slow stitcher’s blog and at the Peranakan Museum.
