What happens when artistes of different schools and practices get together? Does one school necessarily take over the other – or would one style look oddly out of place? Or perhaps would something brand new and intriguing be born instead?
In the case of four contemporary local bands, they are gearing up to jam with traditional musicians to create lively new sounds for Night Festival 2009 on 10 and 11 July. The bands, Amateur Takes Control, Lunar Node, Tiramisu and The Pinholes, will join a cultural ensemble that includes Kompang Troupe, Keroncong Players, and Indian percussionists, for a special music segment.
Aptly named Re:Play, the segment promises a different take on how contemporary and cultural music are seen, and hopes to explain that how both new and traditional music are connected are interpreted by the public audiences themselves.
National Museum held a media conference announcing the lineup for Night Festival and those present had a preview of Re:Play when The Pinholes and their collaborator, Irwan Ishmael, who has over 10 years of experience in playing the sitar, played three songs for the audience. In the video clip below, The Pinholes and Irwan tell us more about their collaboration.

Re:Play is a programme organised by NHB’s youth outreach programme which aims to put youths in charge of their own culture and heritage by encouraging them to interpret museums, culture and heritage differently themselves.
Re:Play is produced by creative outfit Villains, NHB’s community partner for the event. Leveraging on the different expertise of the members of Villains from art to music, community programmes such as Re:Play are especially designed with youths and the community in mind.

I think this will be a great mix.Old school is the new way these days and not just in music, but fashion and arts. Most famous artists now days use technological tools to mix and reinvent old music.Audio systems are invented just for that.
