I Can Relate to This!

Peranakan Museum

A very ‘Colourful’ experience with a massive touch of modernity which we talk about- Now! I never knew that pearls were a taboo for them, but we All use them in our ornaments widely” Wendy Heng

“Its so nice and heart warming to know how sustaining the Peranakan Culture is from The Birth of it and till The Death…” Syah

“More in-depth explanation about this wonderful culture, which I previously knew it as Babas and Nonyas!” Eija

“I so know now what are their Attire and Lifestyle, which no other lady will be in Her WEDDING!!!” Dinesh

“The Intro was Awesome with the usage of a monologue which ventured us into this Sustaining Culture/Art” Maathavan

Starting of with an interesting intro about the Peranakan, a monologue which never to be missed, about this Pipib with three husbands. Which opened the window for us to consume more from the Museum, or shall I say, “Fun House”.

Going up the stairs gave us a better understanding and views, literally! On how the lifestyle was like, together with the beauty of their customs, Art work embroideries, Behaviors, Practices, house holds and even their Jewelleries(Baba Bling)!

To sum it all up, this place gave us an Icon on what really, multi-racial influence and fusion is all about, from the mixture of Chinese, Malays, Indians and even the Europeans. Fantastically Fascinating!!!

From the Per Anak Kan-s, from Malaysia and Singapore (14th SMYC 09).

Editor’s note:

20 participants from the 14th Singapore-Malaysia Youth Camp visited the Peranakan Museum for an institutional visit as part of the bilateral camp’s cultural exchange programme. The 20 youths, 10 from Singapore and 10 from Malaysia, used Peranankan heritage as a point of departure to compare their heritage and identities. By asking what are the differences between Peranakan influences in Singapore and Malaysia, the aim was to encourage the youths to better understand their own cultural identities and the importance of preserving their own heritage .

This post from the Youth Camp’s participants’ aims to capture some of their reflections on what they have gained in this visit to the Museum. The reflections and notes from the other participants will be posted on Yesterday.sg over the next couple of days, and we hope all other readers will likewise gain from them.
