So good, you ate it on its own

Living in Singapore we are blessed with all kinds of bread available for breakfast - the Chinese pau, the Indian roti and even this French-style bread. No, we are not talking about baguettes here, but rather a freshly baked loaf of crusty bread that was made fresh every day and delivered to you via your friendly bread salesman. These loaves of golden goodness are great with soups and curries, and if you look hard enough, you might be fortunate to find one of your local bakeries still preparing this fresh every day. (I know my neighbourhood bakery in Marine Parade does!)
yg remembers what he used to call it:
long before gardenia came onto the breadfast scene, our breakfast diet was a loaf of french bread which we called chiam tau loti. the crust, when fresh, was so crispy that you could eat it on its own. it did not have such a fanciful name as baguette when you get it from delifrance. we bought ours from the bayi who came around on his bicycle or from the kampong coffee shop. each loaf - enough to feed the whole family - cost 25 cents.
Read more on ygblog. This chiam tau loti is still so good that you can even eat it on its own. Does your neighbourhood store still sell freshly baked crusty bread like this? If so, maybe skip that package of sliced bread and give some freshly-baked chiam tai loti a go. Who knows? You might get hooked.
