I Can Relate to This!

50 Years Time, I Envision that Singapore Will be…

By Clarence Cheong Jia Hao

mrtStepping out of my apartment in Pungol, I hurry to the MRT station, a mere 50 metres away. Another day at work had started for me. A signboard at the station tells me when the next MRT will arrive. The wait isn’t very long. 2 minutes later, an MRT glides into the station. The people waiting at the station immediately move to the side, allowing the passengers inside to exit easily. An old lady boards the MRT with me. She sighs as she sees the packed carriage. However, her worries are quickly dispelled. A young teen notices her plight, and voluntarily gives his seat up to her. I smiled at him, nodding approvingly at his act of courtesy.

marina15 mins later, I arrive at my destination, Marina Bay. I enter my office, and start up Internet Explorer. Everything on page loads instantly due to the high-speed fiber broadband, and I start my work. Later, at about 1p.m, I meet with one of my customers for lunch. He is a business man from the Middle East. While waiting for the food, we strike a conversation. He says, “Your airport, Changi is extremely clean! There are no cleaners there, yet there is no litter on the floor. I find this amazing. The store owners there are extremely polite to me. I also find your shuttle service there very efficient. It just took me only 10 minutes to arrive here! Singapore is the best country that I have ever visited. I will definitely do business in Singapore again!” Soon, the food arrives, and my customer is full of praises for the exquisite food served. I remarked to him that Singapore has become a centre not only of business, but good authentic food from around the world.

cultural-fairThat night, after my work, I attend a cultural fair. The admission is free, and the theatre is packed with people. There, I watch multi-cultural dances, performed by well renowned troupes from Russia and China. The audience, mainly locals with a mix of regional nationalities, clapped enthusiastically throughout. Outside in the hallway, I mingle with performers and other guests, speaking in multilingual tongues. The arts scene has grown more eclectic, as Singaporeans continue to embrace the world. I went home tired but satisfied - the city I so loved has become more vibrant, more cosmopolitan, without losing its own cultural DNA.

public-transport1In 50 years time, Singapore will be a hub where people from all over the world come to work, live, and play. Singapore will be the meeting point of the east and the west, and people will enjoy coming to Singapore The public transport system will be advanced, and efficient, and everywhere is just a doorstep away. There will be many more buses, MRTs. The communication infrastructure will be reliable, and there will be high-speed broadband in every home and office. As an aviation hub, flights to other countries will be cheap and hassle-free.

foodThere will be appreciation of different cultures. People from different races and religions will respect each other, and there will be no discrimination. Singaporeans will be able to attend cultural fairs, and experience different cultures. Singapore will be a food paradise, where people can sample first-class cuisines from all over the world. Foodies from the other side of the globe will flock to Singapore just to enjoy the food.

kindness2People will come to Singapore to play. With the IR in place, youngsters and elderly alike will enjoy coming to Singapore. Singapore will be a fun place, where people come for their holidays. The people in Singapore will be gracious, and cultured. There will be no need for Courtesy Lions, Phua Chu Kang campaigns, as the people have become very civic-minded.

educationThe education system in Singapore will be holistic, and everyone in Singapore will be able to receive quality-education. The education system will incorporate both western and eastern ideologies, giving the students a much more all-rounded education. Singaporeans will then be better able to compete with people from all over the world.

I am 13 years-old now, and the next 50 years are my prime years, when I will contribute to Singapore. Now, I will equip myself with the necessary skills and mindset. Besides studying hard, I will also pay attention to what is happening in Singapore and in other countries. In the next 50 years, I will do my best and work with other fellow Singaporeans to build our beloved nation into this dream country that I just described.
