Did you know that there are people who’ve never seen a toilet? Did you know there are people who’ve never seen an electric stove, or a watch? All of what we take for granted every day we owe to our Republic. Indefatigable in their nationalism, the Founders in 40 years transformed Singapore from the swarms to the cities, and the thatched cottages to the skyscrapers. A knowledge-based economy is now established where illiteracy was once rife; verdant, luxuriant greenery now flourish over the garden city, where impoverishment and destitution once unstoppably roamed. The Republic was enfeebled by racial riots of the 1960s, debilitated by oil shocks of the 1970s, immobilised by the major recession of the 1980s, enervated by the Asian Crisis of the 1990s, incapacitated by the 9/11 attacks and SARS of the new century.
Should I liken my Republic to perhaps a tree in the garden of the world, I would depict Singapore as a mighty Banyan tree majestic with its fortitudinous frame; entangling roots lodged deep beneath the luxuriant earth, it make perfect the crystal scenery. Through sashaying rain, paralyzing thunder, the pelting of ice crystals; through a myriad of calamities and setback Singapore remains resilient and proud. It is with absolute indubitability and certitude, therefore, that I solemnly pledge my citizenship and nationalistic sentiments in the image of the Founders. I love my republic.
