I Can Relate to This!

I’m proud to be a Singaporean because……

By Sean Ong Zhi Han

…Singapore has been able to find innovative ways to overcome our shortage of water and land to meet the needs of our growing population. From NEWater, to land reclamation, to the new Marina Barrage, we have wowed the world and impressed them with the high technology and innovative strategies we employ to solve our shortages.

Singaporeans share an extremely strong bond, especially during adverse periods. The unity among Singaporeans, and the tenacity of the common bond we share, shows how much Singapore means to us.

Throughout our 50 years of self-governance, Singaporeans have stood united to tackle crisis after crisis - from the H1N1 virus, to the foiled Yishun MRT Station terrorist attack, to the current global financial meltdown - and we will bounce back from the crisis more resilient than ever.

50-years-of-self-governance-my-memories-my-moments_pic4We do not call ourselves Malays, Indians, Chinese, Eurasians, or “Others” just because our language and cultures are different; we call ourselves Singaporeans, and we have, as Singaporeans, a unique culture of our own.

Singapore has been widely acknowledged to be a state with no natural resources of its own. I, however, beg to differ. We’ve a natural resource, and the resource is what has been spurring Singapore to success all this while. The resource is the people of Singapore, who have pledged to be one united people, regardless of race, language or religion, to build a democratic Singapore, which treats its people with justice and equality, to achieve happiness, prosperity and progress for this beloved nation.

50-years-of-self-governance-my-memories-my-moments_pic5That is what makes me proud to be a Singaporean, on its 44th year of independence, and 50th year of self-governance. For a “little red dot” like us to achieve so much in 50 years, it is by no means a small feat.
