My Moments

By Chua Bing Quan

To me, some of the most important moment in Singapore is the strikes. In the past, Chinese communists started giving Chinese newspapers about anti-British rule. Communists were a group of people who wanted to take over the rule from British. After reading it, many people became angry the British. The communists also set up a trade union for workers. Many people joined this trade union, believing that the trade unions would help them get higher pay and better working conditions. The communists hoped that the workers would help them overthrow the British government. The communists encouraged the workers to go on strikes and demand for higher pays and better working conditions.

The communists also cause the Hock Lee Bus riots. It took place on 23 April-14 May 1955. In these riot, students when in to support the strikers. To disperse the crowd, the police used tear gas and fire hoses to spray water at us. Tear gas is a type of gas that makes a person’s eye sting and fill with tears so the person cannot see properly. In this riot 4 was killed and 31 was injured. The riots had cause alot of damage to Singapore. Instead, the riots also caused many to stop supporting the communists and wanted the Government to take stronger action against the communists.

The second is about the election for a Prime Minister. In this election, many organisations such as the PAP, the People Action Party, Labour Front, SPP, the Singapore Progressive Party, Democrats and The Alliance. I think we had did the right choice to elect Mr Lee Kuan Yew because he had developed Singapore into a modern city like now.

Lastly, it is about a terrorist who escaped from Whitley Road Detention Centre at 4.05 p.m., 27 February 2008. His named is called Mas Selamat Bin Kastari. This report was later confirmed by both the Singapore and Malaysian governments, with the date of capture given as 1 April 2009. On 8 May 2009, the media in Singapore reported that Mas Selamat had been captured by Malaysian authorities in Johor, Malaysia. His report was later confirmed by both the Singapore and Malaysian governments, with the date of capture given as 1 April 2009. This also taught us to be vigilant at all times.
