Celebrated by Hindus all over the world, the festival of lights or Deepavali falls on 17 October this year. Besides thanking gods for knowledge, happiness, peace and wealth they’ve been blessed with, Hindus light oil lamps in their homes that morning.

Join us at our museums this Saturday and immerse yourself in the spirit of Deepavali!
At the National Museum of Singapore (NMS), discover the art of henna painting on the body. A common practice among Hindus and Muslims, the henna plant is believed to bring love and good luck. For the beauty-conscious, why not have your eyebrows threaded? An old technique used for centuries, threading is quick procedure - a twisted loop of cotton thread is rolled over the skin to pull out unwanted hair by the root.
Do remember to check out the Rangoli display at NMS when you’re done removing those follicles! A traditional Indian art form of decorating walls and floors during Deepavali, these beautiful designs are made of rice or lentil. Besides enhancing the beauty of its surrounndings, Rangoli also symbolises joy and happiness.
Feeling artistic? Have a go at creating your very own Rangoli at the Singapore Art Museum (SAM) and bring your masterpiece home! Enjoy a musical entourage with Bollywood Melodies and Diwali Music Dhamaaka performances throughout the afternoon.
Admission to all NHB museums is free this saturday; we certainly hope to see you there!
To all our Hindu friends, have a Happy Deepavali!
