Don’t take that tap water for granted!

We are quite fortunate in Singapore for well-planned infrastructure such as transport, power and of course, water. Freddy Neo remembers a time when water rationing had to be enacted in Singapore, and the impending feeling of doom of seeing the water level of the reservoir slowly recede.
I grew up in a house near to the Peirce Reservoir. I often went to the reservoir with my father and siblings during weekends to walk or fish and we could see the dwindling water stock. The shoreline was receding. With each passing day, the shoreline was further and further away. All around, the dry bed was baked solid dry and cracking.
You can read the rest of Freddy’s account on Good Morning Yesterday. You can also read his personal connection to the construction of the Pierce Reservoir, too.
I can’t remember the last time we had a water rationing exercise in Singapore, but they were still happening in the early 80s. I seem to remember a water rationing poster from the same period which features a small kid in a pail of water - the headline says something like, “What would happen if you had to bathe like this every day?”. Does anybody know what I’m talking about?

That was a rather OLD picture. I remember rationing while living in a HDB flat in the 70's and 80's. Periodically, we would have to gather up all the pails in the house and fill them with water right before rationing started. Scare pictures were posted in the national papers showing how low reservoir levels were. Even in my young mind then, I was wondering if the hoarding was causing a spike rather than a saving of water usage nationwide.
