I Can Relate to This!

Have you ever been in love?

It was 1975.

Skaters whizzed furiously pass her on the ice as she precariously tried to skate on her own. Dressed in a dark velvet jacket, she was determined to maintain a graceful poise despite her awkward moves. A nice young man who watched the girl from afar, glided towards her. With a warm smile, he offered to teach her the basic steps to ice-skating.

He was 23, she was 17.

They got married nine years later.

I uncovered this photo of my parents few weeks back and asked my mother if I could keep it, simply because the photograph exudes this unpretentious honesty; my father was grinning happily while my mother looked shyly away, almost indifferent.

Taken just barely a month after they begun dating, did my parents know they were to spend their entire lives together? Were they truly in love? Seeing my parents look so fresh-faced and youthful triggers a strange fondness. My parent were once young too, they know the woes of love.

I’m in my twenties, yet do I truly comprehend love and its misgivings?

Still, I want to believe love is intangible and impermanent. That fleeting glance that makes the heart ache, that electrifying tingle that sends shockwaves when the hands touch, even that light brush of the lips in a kiss; ever so ephemeral.

Have you ever been in love?
