Public Enemies

Who have been some of the most famous - or infamous - criminals in Singapore? The two that come to my mind are Adrian Lim, who in the 80s murdered two children with two accomplices, and more recently Mas Selamat, an ISD detainee who managed to flee captivity and escape to Johor. These two were the names that immediately popped up when thinking about high-profile criminals in Singapore - but Uncle Dicko, who collects newspaper clippings of major crimes in Singapore, threw up a name I have never heard before: Morgan the Kidnapper.

The tale of Morgan is as old as Singapore itself. Uncle Dicko blogs his memories about Morgan Teo, aka Morgan the Kidnapper and the shootout at Siang Lim Park, which happened in August of 1965:

Morgan Teo and his gang had been involved in a string of high profile kidnappings where ransom was paid for the release of those he captured. He was known to skip in and out of Singapore to nearby Indonesia. He was considered very dangerous. Besides the guns he always carried with him, he was also known to have quite an arsenal or cache of smuggled arms and weapons, such as hand grenades. That day in Siang Lim Park, he threw 2 of these grenades at the police ambush party. After fatally shooting Inspector Allan Lim of the CID, he eluded capture and made his escape from my kampong.

According to Uncle Dicko, there’s very little information in the web about the Morgan the Kidnapper. Find out what happens next in What happened to Morgan the Kidnapper?
