Toying With All Hallow’s Eve

"I'm a MAC! I'm Minnie! I'm also a MAC!"

On 31 October each year, most Western cultures celebrate Halloween. The festival has both Celtic roots, that mark the end of summer and the bounty of autumn’s harvest, and Christian influences, through the observance of All Saint’s Day, which falls on 1 November. Halloween has since become a secular holiday with the popular folklore belief that the day is when otherworldly beings travel into our world. Hence the practice of dressing up as monsters and spirits to blend in and not be spotted and harmed by malevolent spirits.

Today the festival has become a great excuse to dress up creatively for the many celebratory parties expected. In good fun the National Heritage Board (NHB) co-organised a Halloween’s party with the MINT Museum of Toys: “Toying with All Hallow’s Eve - A Halloween’s Party at MINT Museum of Toys!”

The costume theme for the night was “toys” - a theme broad enough to accommodate popular cultures (comics, superheros, anime, cosplay…) and yet completely apt given the museum’s specialty.

Organised to promote the many different museums to youths, we invited our pool of Young Museum Envoys and extended invitations to guests from three different groups: bloggers with omy.sg, a pool of photography fans, and readers of popular local fashion blog Fashion Nation.

Despite the heavy downpour we had a great turnout with nearly 100 guests. Besides learning about the museum they were treated to activities from tarot cards and crystal readings, to having their own Halloween’s caricature figures drawn.

We also brought in costume characters, a party magician and ‘live’ music performances to jazz up the mood.

Kudos to the guests who very gamely came dressed in the most fun and outrageous party costumes - we gave out exclusive Museums SEE DIFFERENT totebags and MINT Museum dinner vouchers and memberships to the best-dressed guests.

As with previous events, we always want to encourage and share different point-of-views and hence here are some of the guests’ experience at the party we thought were really interesting.

You can also log on to Facebook and check out the instant polaroid shots of the guests here. To find out more about joining us as a Young Museum Envoy and be invited to events and get involved, check out See Different.

Party on! See ya'all!

This event was organised by Museums SEE DIFFERENT, NHB ongoing youth engagement initiative that promotes a museum-going culture in youths by encouraging them to experience museums, culture and heritage differently themselves, working with youth and social media communities, and recruiting and cultivating young museum envoys to take on proactive roles at museum events and spread word-of-mouth.

Tonight, Museums SEE DIFFERENT is partnering the Singapore Art Museum (SAM) for ‘Inside Out - A PYT Party’ at SAM at 8 Queen Street. The party celebrates the President’s Young Talents exhibition and showcases the most exciting local talents in visual and experiential ‘live’ art and party music. Read more about the party here.
