Once, twice, Thrice Upon a Time… if the phrase sounds familiar to you, that’s because it’s from the current exhibition at the Singapore Art Museum showcasing the best in Pinoy art. Thrice Upon a Time: A Century of Story in the Art of the Philippines invites you to relive some of the stories and art of the Philippines. iso(e)lat!on reckons that this is one of her favourite exhibitions at the SAM thus far.

While the exhibition is on Philippine art, the theme is centred around the artist as the storyteller and the stories they tell… and perhaps how the best stories can be heard more than once. iso(e)lat!on recently visited the exhibition (narrowly catching the free entry during lunchtimes on weekdays) and clearly enjoyed herself. She writes:
I thought this was perhaps one of my favourite exhibitions at the SAM thus far. The sense of history and connection is very strong, and the theme was a very coherent and engaging one. I suppose it’s because I’m not an art literate person, so when an exhibition is centered around an specific artist or an art theme, I find it difficult to be engaged, but this Philippines collection was centered on their history, especially through the Spanish colonization and the rising nationalism and increasing sensitivity and awareness of a national identity as well as a portrayal of religion and religious influence in art. I think these are pretty strong themes in art history, like these are areas in which passion and introspection runs high and deep. I believe that contributed to a very appealing and engaging exhibition, be it towards understanding the people, the artists, or the society (and the artist himself as part of the people and the society).
You can read her post here - it’s got lots of pictures of the exhibits that gives you the idea of the range and span of the exhibition. Thrice Upon A Time is on at the Singapore Art Museum until the end of January 2010, so it’s a good time to pay a visit and be dazzled by some new and wonderful stories, once, twice and many times over.
