Arnaldo blogs about the bust relief of the Philippine hero Jose Rizal that was erected last year outside the Asian Civilisations Museum.
Most Singaporeans would not be familiar with Jose Rizal, but our Filipino friends hold him in the highest regard as a national hero who sparked off the Philippine Revolution. During his first travel to Spain in 1882, he made a stopover in Singapore. Arnaldo writes:
His diary entries during his first trip [en route to Barcelona] was most useful, believe it or not you could still find the places he visited just by reading his diary. Most of the places he visited are still standing, I think with the only exception of the hotel [Hotel de la Paix] where he lodged [Peninsula Hotel today], where he read German magazines while waiting for his diner that he complain, took forever to be served. The Masonic lodge sits right across the road where Hotel de la Paix is located [his lodging was certainly arranged by his Masonic connection], one of the three principal hotels during the time of his visit. The Raffles hotel was said to be the finest.

No wonder Rizal is the Philippines' national hero. He really stands out! His works is still applicable for our present society, not only for the Filipinos but for other societies as well.

As a Singaporean myself, i don't see the reason why Singapore need to honour a Freemason, someone who's considered a hero back in his homeland. He is indeed beyond reasonable doubt a Freemason.

@Frankie Clearly you have no idea on how great Dr. Jose Rizal is. I don't think it matters if he's a Freemason, for someone like you to judge him based on that is simply absurd. I admire Singapore for honoring him.

He's not just honored for his bravery but also for his principles. He fought his colonizers with knowledge, debate, peace and politics rather than swords and guns, and he was the very first one in Asia to do that. Even Gandhi admired Rizal's work and he followed Rizal's principle of peace with the Hunger Strike against the British Government. Something that not just the Filipinos but all citizens of the world should appreciate. Greetings from Singapore. :D
