yg brings us back to a time when this brand of toothpaste had a really racially-insensitive name - Darkie, and the mascot of the brand was a black man sporting a really bright smile. I remember when it was still called Darkie, and during the 80s the name (and mascot) got changed to a less-inflammatory Darlie. All things considered, I’m surprised that the name endured until the 1980s.
in the 50s and 60s, people were apparently not so sensitive about racial and race issues. the word ‘darkie’ is used to refer to black people in the united states. although the new english name ‘darlie’ has no racial connotation, the chinese name for the tooth paste remains unchanged - black people’s toothpaste.
Besides the politically-incorrect toothpaste,yg shows us some less offensive oral hygiene equipment, an aluminium tongue scraper. Tongue scrapers are less common these days, although you can find some plastic ones sold in your neighbourhood personal care store. Read more in those toothbrushing days.
