Art; a reflection within the soul

art1Having subscribed to a particular quote-churning feed on Twitter, mornings have never been greater.  Occasionally cryptic but most often, inspirational, reading these words of wisdom are awesome morning perk-me-ups for a non-coffee drinker like myself.

So on the bus to work this morning, I found myself thinking over one of the quotes I had read:

“Art calls for complete mastery of techniques, developed by reflection within the soul.”

How often do we give our all? On a daily basis, what would require us to put our heart into making something worth the while? Nothing much, I’d reckon. While art can be created masterfully, if it lacks the heart, it is only an empty shell.

But that’s just my take on things.

For readers who frequent Yesterday.sg, you would be familiar with the subjects we deal with - from reminiscing fond childhood memories, revisiting buildings of old to what’s going on in our museums. While Art has not always been the main thrust of the site, we think there is a quiet beauty in the subject worth exploring. One can lament that there is no time to visit art galleries or museums. In our hectic lives, we fail to observe our surroundings - there is art everywhere (as seen from this Heritage TV episode on Public Art!).

There’s no big mystery about art, well, that’s what we would like to believe. You might have encountered an art work that left a strange taste in your mouth or something that caused more confusion than enlightenment, but this should not be cause for concern. When looking at art, everyone is on an equal platform - whether or not you’ve been trained in Art. As an observer, an on-looker, a patron, you have every right to decide if you like or dislike something and there’s absolutely nothing wrong with that.

With the first Yesterday.sg-driven art show in February, we hope to open the world of art to everyone. No inhibitions. No restrictions. As to sync with the focus of Yesterday.sg, the art works will deal with the theme of Nostalgia, Sentiments and Memories - something that everyone can relate too. We are currently working with the Singapore Contemporary Young Artists and tapping on their extensive pool of promising young local artists to pull together a show that’s both diverse and heartfelt.

Portraying their thoughts and ideas through a whole host of mediums, expect colourful splashes of pop art, profound sound installations and projections, delicate pieces of ceramics and much more from these artists. Come with an open mind and heart, and expect to walk away harbouring a mix of emotions. Free yourself from the routine of life and see some art for yourself.

Keep your eyes peeled as we divulge more information along the way ;)

I am still a novice trying to get my head around "art" - enjoyed reading this column. Do keep them coming. Art appreciation in singapore has a long way to go!

As I own and operate a Gallery on Orchard Road at Palais Renaissance, I was very happy to stumble upon this blog. One of the reasons that we specialize in Pop Art is that it is easy to understand. Pop Art is essentially turning every day items into works of Art. It is about appreciating the things we take for granted and turning them into the extraordinary.
