At the barber

Sitting at one of the ‘new-fangled’ ten-minute barber shops that have sprouted all over the place, chinatown boy reflects on yesterday’s barbers, that were separated into men’s and ladies’ barbers unlike the unisex ones today.

Older Singaporeans may still remember the barbershops of old, some being little more than a glorified chair set up in a back lane. If you search hard enough, you might still be able to find one or two in the streets of Singapore. While barbers appear to have moved from quiet back lanes and into the glitzy neighbourhood malls, it seems some things don’t change. chinatownboy observes while waiting his turn at the queue:

A barbershop is also an interesting place to sit and watch and although each customer is to be dealt with in 10 minutes, there was still much to watch and hear as the queue was quite long. Ah, one, probably newly qualified senior citizen, was enjoying a haircut by this lady barber (his regular by the way they talk). In a way, he was entertaining her with tales of his adventures overseas, with polite responses. What a way to relieve stress, I thought to myself as I was trying to concentrate on a book I brought along to read. Reading an English book and eavesdropping Mandarin conversations.

I wondered to myself too, what if this barber has her own blog. Won’t t be fun to read about her clients. (^^)

Read chinatownboy’s observations at the barber in bullockcartwater - At the barber. I’m still looking for a barber in Singapore who can give the neck massage and “neck crack” (like cracking your knuckles, but the barber cracks the joints around your neck) after you’re done with your haircut. Anyone with any suggestions?
