If you travel to hinterland Malaysia, especially in the small towns where the pace of development is not as rapid as ours, many of you might get a chance to see how Singapore was like 50 years ago. In a recent visit to Kuching*, yg spots some playgrounds that are very much like the ones Singapore had in the 60s, but probably not anymore today.
yg remembers:
i was in kuching recently when i saw these pieces of equipment at a playground, then memories of playgrounds where i had played and where i used to take my children to came flooding back. even up to the 80s, the old type of swings and see-saws were still around. i remember the see-saws and swings at farrer park and at dhoby ghaut, just across from the rendevous restaurant.
I saw a swing like the one in the picture in KL just last month, along with the later “models” - the tire! Certainly, playgrounds in Singapore today don’t have much in common with the playgrounds 50 or even 20 years ago. Remember Singapore’s old playgrounds with yg in Yesteryear’s playgrounds.
*I should note here that as the capital of Sarawak, Kuching is not a small town by Malaysian standards - but it would be a stretch to also call it a big city!
