Memories of the New Seventh Storey Hotel

It’s coming to nearly two years since the New Seventh Storey Hotel closed its doors to make way for the expanded Bugis MRT station, but it’s obvious for many the hotel still retains a charming memory for many who have graced its rooms and taken a ride on the legendary elevator. James Seah and Derek Tait both recently penned their memories of one of Singapore’s best-kept lodging secrets.

Derek remembers what it was like to stay at the NSSH in 1990:

I know that many people stayed there in the 1960s on arrival in Singapore and again when they were due to leave. Reading James’s blog made me look for an old leaflet that I had from the hotel from 1990. We’d travelled around Australia for 6 months and wrote to several hotels in Singapore, from Sydney, to see if they had any accommodation. The New 7th Storey Hotel was the only one kind enough to write back and book us in by mail. When we got a taxi from the airport to the hotel, the driver said, ‘No good! Very old!’ We’d stayed in worse places backpacking around Australia so we weren’t too bothered.

Read James’ reflection about old buildings and new here, and Derek’s recollections of the New Seventh Storey Hotel here. The building may be down, but the hotel still maintains some real estate on the web, where you can sign in on the guestbook.

Singapore is one cool and collected town. I would imagine that this is not there. They don't appear to like anything aged, rather everything looks like it is out of a fairy tale book. It is new, cars are new, the buildings appear new, and the streets are sooo clean. Yet in and around some alleyway you find the old Singapore in its glory. One very interesting country indeed.

I am glad to see that for many people the hotel still retains a charming memory, and it make me feel sorry that I haven't visited this hotel... Anyway, it triggered some emotional feelings to read this article, so good job.

Yes, attachment to an era, particularly ones youth includes memories of buildings and locations where that youth was enjoyed. Gee, the buildings that house our dance venues are still operating, albeit with a different theme, rules and licences.

It is the most comfortable site I have found as yet. From this site you will find links to local interest groups focusing on Sandy Bay and the Western Cape as well as the issues surrounding naturism in the area.

So, this was or wasn't demolished? I know the announcement was made in June,2008. I haven't heard of the outcome yet.I still hear of it being in travel guides. Is it just on the internet? The building isn't standing anymore?

I think it's really a backpacker hotel, but we had a deluxe room. It was clean and very spacious. There was a TV, fridge and kettle in the room
