Think Robinsons, and whether you think of the one at Centrepoint or the one that used to be in Raffles Place gives you an indication of your age! Derek Tait writes about Robinsons, whose flagship building used to be at Raffles Place until 1972. What happened then?
Does anyone remember Robinsons which I think was near Raffles Place? We all used to shop there and I think that it was very popular with British families. I remember at Christmas, it would be decorated with a giant hoarding showing Father Christmas in his sleigh being pulled by several reindeer. Underneath, in large letters, it said, ‘Merry Christmas!’
In 1972, a fire razed the Robinsons building, sending millions of dollars worth of merchandise up in smoke and killing nine. After that Robinsons moved to Orchard Road, where it still resides today. Read about the Robinson’s building fire in Derek’s Sampans, Banyans and Rambutans.

Robinson before the fire was at Raffles Place itself. Your picture of Robinson was probably in the late 50s or early 60s.
