Malay Heritage Centre presents Arts Weekend!

Enjoy an Arts Weekend at the Malay Heritage Centre. Free outdoor screenings and gigs, exhibitions, workshops and more, it will be the weekend of fun and excitement for the whole family with food and drinks included!

* Outdoor events will be held in the Istana Hall in case of rain

FRIDAY, 23 APRIL 2010

6pm - 7pm: Rosli Mansor/FREE ADMISSION*
Singapore’s own Carlos Santana, Rosli Mansor will present a mix of original and cover songs, including a selection of tunes from P.Ramlee films, accompanied by a full band and a singer.

7pm -  8.30pm: LOMOGRAPHY loves Kampong Gelam featuring works by Phillip Aldrup, Lawrence Chiam and Nurul Huda/ FREE ADMISSION
Join us for the opening of a special Lomography exhibition at the Istana Hall. Three photographers, three rolls of film and three different Lomography cameras. See Kampong Gelam in a new lomographic light!

8.30pm - 11pm: Laskar Pelangi (The Rainbow Troops)
Dir: Riri Riza / 2008 / Indonesia / 125 min / 35mm / PG / FREE ADMISSION*
It’s time to bring your favourite picnic baskets and roll out the mats and enjoy this heartwarming film which is set to screen at the beautiful outdoors and lush green lawns of Malay Heritage Centre.

Based on a best seller that sold more than 500,000 copies in Indonesia, Laskar Pelangi follows the trials and tribulations of a committed teacher, Mus, and his students on a remote but beautiful island called Belitong. At Muhammadiyah elementary school, the dedicated Mus and his colleague Mr Harfan teach values not taught in the richer schools. The school threathens to close down, and the teachers and their students struggle to keep the school open by gaining the respect of the other schools and the village they all come from.

8am - 12noon: Kampong Gelam Digital Shoot-out / Fee:$25

Start the day with shooting tips before heading out to photograph the diverse sights in the Arab Street/Kampong Gelam area. Each participant will get four 3R photos of their own work at the end of the workshop. Suitable for hobbyists familiar with shooting techniques and DSLR usage, who are looking for new scenarios to exercise their skills and to get on-location guidance.

12noon and 2pm: Little Gems 1 - Short films from Southeast Asia / FREE ADMISSION
Enjoy a selection of award-winning short films from Southeast Asia curated by film programmer Yuni Hadi.

1pm and 3pm: Little Gems 2 - Malay short films from Singapore / FREE ADMISSIONA charming selection of Malay short films curated by filmmaker Ghazi Alqudcy

4pm - 5pm: Kopi and Conversation / FREE ADMISSION
Get up close and personal with your favourite stars in this informal interview session. Malay celebrities Sanif Olek and Sleeq will reveal what inspires them, their plans for 2010, and more! Hosted by Sharon Ismail. Have some kopi on us too!

6pm - 7pm: Sleeq/ FREE ADMISSION*
Check out one of Singapore’s hottest young bands! Sleeq has been making waves since winning the award for Most Popular Local Artist. This duo sings in both Malay and English and have performed at the Esplanade, Formula Green Concert and Hip Hop Fest

8.30pm - 11pm: Children of Heaven
By Majid Majidi / Iran / 1997 / PG / 89 min / 35mm / FREE ADMISSION*
Another outdoor screening to end your evening.

The film was nominated for an Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film in 1998. It is a poignant story of a brother and sister’s adventure over a lost pair of shoes. Ali takes his little sister Zahra’s shoes to the shoemaker but loses them on the way home. The siblings decide to keep the predicament a secret from their parents, knowing that there is no money to  buy a replacement pair, and devise a scheme to share Ali’s sneakers.
