Preparations are well underway for CIVIC LIFE: TIONG BAHRU, the groundbreaking community arts project which will see hundreds of Singaporean volunteers taking part in a film about the Tiong Bahru estate and hawker centre. (See: http://yesterday.sg/2010/05/our-civic-lives/).
Joe Lawlor, one half of the filmmaking duo desperateoptimists, is back in Singapore this week to finalise the shooting schedule with Eric Khoo’s Zhao Wei Films, who will be providing all of the technical know-how for the project. While here, Joe will also be meeting with the residents, community groups, hawkers and traders who will be taking part in the film.
Meanwhile, leading Singaporean thinkers are posting their thoughts on the ideas behind the project at http://civiclife.sg/ Poet Yong Shu Hoong muses on the importance of place for a writer, short story writer Wena Poon makes links between community celebrations in Spain and her memoirs of a Singaporean childhood, while playwright Desmond Sim asks: why ARE Singaporeans so obsessed with food? We would love to have your thoughts on these ideas, too, so please do join in the conversation at: http://civiclife.sg/
