Singapore’s past sporting glory - squash

When you think about Singapore’s glorious sporting past, you might be inclined to think of soccer and the fever pitch when Singapore took part in the Malaysia cup. But did you know that during the 1970s and 1980s, Singapore was also a major player in another sport - Squash?

Squash is a ball game played with racquets played in a small four-walled court. Unfortunately, it hasn’t been included in any Olympic games so far despite intense lobbying from squash groups, but in Singapore you can find more than a few squash courts around. Chun See writes:

I wonder if younger Singaporeans know that at one time, Singapore was one of the top squash nations in the world. I believe we were ranked within the top 10 in the world at one stage. In Asia we were second only to Pakistan. And we regularly won the East Asia Squash Championships. And of course, we routinely thrashed our arch rivals Malaysia in our annual encounter.

Chun See touches on Singapore’s sporting past in Squash in two posts, Where have all the (Singapore) squash players gone?
and Where have all the squash courts gone?
