Do you keep a blog? Do you read other people’s blogs? Because they’re on the web, blogs are usually meant for public consumption. But what about the thoughts you want to keep private? Uncle Dicko asks if the practice of journalling is still encouraged in today’s internet world.
To some younger readers, the idea of blogging without an audience might be mind-boggling – after all, who’s going to read a private journal? But Uncle Dicko says that journalling was a necessity to commit things to memory for later retrieval:
Keeping of dairies was not a fashion in the past of yesteryears. It was the only logical thing to do if one wanted to record and keep whatever information, details, tidbits, etc..in such a way that they can be easily retrievable anytime. So there was nothing really fashionable about keeping a diary although today the dairies on sale at the malls are very attractive to look at. Many are bound in leather and come with all kinds of sub-sections within the high quality pages. The ordinary ones cost around $ 10…and much, much higher for the “professional” -looking ones.
Do you know that Uncle Dicko’s journals go back to 1963? These cover a range of topics from school life, personal history to world events. That’s certainly a wealth of information contained in those volumes of books. Unlike blogs, a personal diary is a great record for the future because it’s not meant for an audience – which means that such reflections and memories can be kept more honest and open. Perhaps it’s time to get into the habit of penning your thoughts down for your own personal consumption and growth – reach for a pen and notebook today!
