Meow.

Posted by honeychoya

The moon is up and the streets are dark
I wake, I stretch and I try my luck
The “drain cat” in me once again creeps out
I feast on leftovers instead of chasing mice in a roundabout.

I am the Singapura, a well-kept secret
My angelic face, my delicate appearance a favourite
Large eyes and ears, blunt tail looks a little wired
I’m still a pedigree, however that transpired.

First discovered in the 1970s,
My ancestors were found in Singapore, shipped to the U.S and back to Sin City,
Granted official status by the Cat Fanciers’ Association (CFA) in the 1980s,
They strutted the rounds of championships in 1988 – that’s our history!

Southeast Asia is our breeding ground
Though humans like to inject some Burmese/Abyssinian to make it more sound
Whatever it is, just remember to look out for the ticked brown
When you’re out gallivanting and painting the town.

I love to tell the tale of my old grandfathers
Who lived to tell the stories of a hundred others
Grand Champions, Grand Premiers, and Distinguished Merit Award winners
That’s pretty awesome, given we were only twenty years of recognised status!

Because we are slow in reproduction,
We decided to risk a chance of cross-relation
Today you will see our bob-tailed tabbies, tortoise shells all around in Newton
But we bear the same name – Kucinta, when STB had a naming competition.

Cinta to love, and kuching to mean cat,
Owners will discover we are more than that
Lively, curious, intelligent and we like to play catch
We love our humans, especially under bedcovers.

But today my fate is not as said,
I continue to prowl the kopitiams till late
Hoping for scraps, and the heaven’s kind fate
To prevent my breed from disappearing to hell’s gate.
