Every culture holds its own stories that are passed down from generation, to generation. As children, we were easily enthralled by stories – of mythical creatures, fantastic beasts, fragile fairies and benevolent deities, these spurred our imagination to great heights and painted worlds unknown.
Recently the Heritage TV team met up with award-winning children’s books writer Adeline Foo at the Peranakan Museum. She has penned several books on the Peranakan culture – its stories revolving around a little Nonya, Puteh and her adventures.
Adeline’s series of children books were funded by the Heritage Industry Incentive Programme (Hi2P) which encourages the development of new and innovative heritage inspired products and services.
The story behind the series couldn’t be simpler – Adeline was inspired by her colourful Peranakan childhood and felt compelled to share these tales of her unique culture. Mischievous and lovable Puteh was based on Adeline’s five-year old daughter, Tessa (who’s quite a delight, as seen from the HTV clip!). To Adeline, Puteh represented a girl brimming with curiosity. Inquisitive and full of spunk, Puteh was certainly brought to life in her books.
Adeline understands the need to keep her culture alive. In modern day and age, it’s easy to get carried away by our hectic schedules and forget the essence of our heritage. Besides inculcating a love for reading amongst the young, she hopes that these books will evoke an eagerness in them to discover their roots and visit the museums. Her books have been extremely well-received and were taken to the Frankfurt Book Fair; enabling her to bring a little piece of Singapore’s culture overseas.
As I pored through her books later that day, I was overwhelmed by the gorgeous illustrations by Lee Kowling that were so rich in narrative. Adeline’s storytelling is laced with magic, and I was bewitched till the very last page. Transported to Puteh’s world of beaded slippers, embroidered kebayas, amulets and kitchen gods – it truly was heartwarming to be able to see through the eyes of a child again.
(Watch Adeline speak about her books in this episode of Heritage TV!)
