Speaking of Outram Park (which wasn’t really a ‘park’), Chun See uncovers a little more history by shedding light on Outram Prison, which was built in 1847 and demolished in the 1960s. This photo was taken in 1948:

You might also be wondering the etymology of the word Outram – it’s a name, and the Outram area of Singapore is named after Sir James Outram, a British general and hero who fought in the Indian Mutiny of 1857. Another participant in the suppression of the Indian Mutiny was Sir Henry Havelock, who lends his name to Havelock Road. The Indian Mutiny of 1857, which is sometimes called India’s first war for independence, is not to be confused with the Sepoy Mutiny of 1915, which happened in Singapore.

In his post, Chun See has a map of the Outram area where you can see the location of Outram Prison. There’s also a picture of a Chinese temple that needs identifying – check them out here.
