Tomorrow, Christians all over the world commemorate Good Friday, or the day when Jesus was unjustly executed, as part of the run-up to Easter, where Christians believe he was resurrected from the dead three days later. In this post from last year, Jerome documents a local tradition observed by Catholics in Singapore on the evening of Good Friday: a candlelight procession at the Church of St Joseph in Victoria Street.

Jerome writes:

Once a year during the Good Friday, the compound of St. Joseph’s Church on Victoria Street is transformed into a sea of candlelight, as thousands descend on the church and its compound for the Good Friday procession, spilling over into the area of Queen Street just behind the church. The procession is held to commemorate the crucifixion of Jesus Christ on Good Friday and is part of an evening service where the events leading up to the crucifixion and immediately after the crucifixion of Christ are reenacted.

St Joseph’s Church is by itself quite an old church – the foundation stone was laid in 1851 and it was completed in 1853, making it one of the older colonial-period architecture still found in Singapore. You can read about the procession in St Joseph’s in Jerome’s post here.
