St Gregory the Illuminator? Is the name unfamiliar? We might know it better as the Armenian Church, the first church built in Singapore (way back in 1835) and now stands as a National Monument. Earlier this month, the Greek-Orthodox church celebrated a major feast day commemorating the Nativity of the Mother of God. Due to the small population of the faith-community here, celebrations such as these are quite rare! Alvin gives us a peek inside the Armenian church and this rare celebration of the Greek Orthodox church in Singapore.

Thank you for mentioning the event for which I helped to coordinate. However, I must make a correction here. It wasn’t the Greek Orthodox Church that was using the Armenian Church to celebrate the Nativity of the Mother of God. Fr Serge Keleher who celebrated the liturgy for us belongs to the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, an eastern rite church which is in full communion with the Pope of Rome, though sharing the same liturgical tradition and calendar as the Orthodox Church. So we are catholics, not greek orthodox.
