It’s not very often you hear the term ‘Straits Settlements’ anymore – probably only during your school days in history book references. The Straits Settlements was the collective term for Penang, Malacca and Singapore along the Malay Peninsula, along with Labuan in Borneo. This logo of Straits Settlements Police Force is one of the rare reminder of the Straits Settlements period – do you know which building it can be found on?
Here’s a clue:
the present building occupies the site of the first tan tock seng hospital, built by john turnbull thomson (government surveyor, 1841 – 54) in 1844 – 6. in 1858, it was requisitioned by the military authorities to provide accommodation for the european artillerymen coming to man fort canning. after proper quarters had been built for them, the site was used for some years for the commissariat store and arsenal. the hill was first called mount stamford, after sir stamford raffles.
Find out the answer in yg’s blog.
