Ipoh White Coffee aside, what do you think of when you hear the term “Old Town”, in the Singapore context. I usually think of Chinatown and the Singapore civic district, ie the areas west of the Singapore River. But what about the other side of the Singapore River? Victor Koo revisits some of the sites of this Singapore “Old Town” on the eastern side of the Singapore River, now known as Kampong Glam.
Historically, Kampong Glam formed the Malay enclave designated by the colonial British when they founded the settlement of Singapore, and so if you think about it, it’s had a long history of occupation. But this part of Singapore has seen plenty of changes in the last 20 years. Here are some of the iconic buildings in Kampong Glam that aren’t here anymore:
- New 7th Storey Hotel
- Clyde Terrace Market
- Masjid Bahru
- Blanco Court
To read more about these places, and about this part of Singapore’s Old Town, it’s all part of the answers of Victor’s Old Singapore Quiz (16) which was featured here last week.
