The Japanese Cemetary Park

Posted by noelbynature

Because of our World War II history, you might think that the Japanese Cemetery Park in Hougang was established during the war period; however, its history goes back far further than that – it was established in 1891!

In his post, yg visits the Japanese Cemetery Park and discovers the tombs and the interesting features there.

one surprise find at the japanese cemetery park is this chinese grave of a chinese man. although my mandarin is rather inadequate, i can make out certain characters like ‘hokkien’ and ‘heng hwa’ inscribed on the tombstone. i was told that the tomb had been refurbished. it belonged to the a former cemetery care-taker who died more than 70 years ago.

strangely, this chinese tomb is different from one i came across in another website. could there be more than one chinese grave within the japanese cemetery?

Why is it called a cemetery ‘Park’? That’s because people are no longer interred there after a government prohibition on expanding cemeteries in 1973. The cemetery is still owned and managed by the Japanese Association to this day. Read more of the Japanese Cemetery Park in yg’s post here.

It’s such an elegant park. What a pity that they put that ugly yellow rubbish bin there. I removed it with PaintShopPro in my photo’ album.
