The line that time forgot

In another railway-inspired post, Jerome meanders through the train route from Tanjong Pagar Station and explores the railway route thrrugh Bukit Timah, including the lesser-known Bukit Timah station.

Jerome suggests that the railway line has helped preserve some of the rustic parts of Singapore:

Looking back, I suppose one of the things that came from having a Malaysian railway line operating through Singapore was that it allowed large tracts of the land along the railway and much of the areas around to remain undeveloped and retain the rustic charm that has been lost in much of our island through the rapid modernisation that has overtaken us since our independence, much of which I guess would soon be consigned to the past with the recent agreement on the land swap and the redevelopment of the Railway land.

Given the pace of development in Singapore, this could be one of those catch-it-while-you-still-can moments. The Bukit Timah and Tanjong Pagar stations were late developments to Singapore’s railways system, and Jerome’s post tells us how they came about. Read about them here.
